Jim Waldron's labors abroad have always
emphasized the training of native Christians to reach their own with the gospel.
The work in India began in February 1986. The first preacher training school was
started in 1989. Since then, about 900 men have completed the three year program
and roughly three hundred more have completed the one year program. Since its
inception, the students and graduates have established roughly 1,500
congregations.
Currently, there are 21 preacher training schools in five
states of India with about 660 student preachers enrolled. This number does not
include 75 that are in the school for single women or the 80 or so in the Bible
Institute for the Blind and the Deaf. There are two other American brothers that
work very closely with Jim in setting up the schools, teaching in them and
raising support for them. They are Don Iverson of Banner Elk, NC and Garry Jones
of Clinton, TN.
During the three years training, students are encouraged to
learn a trade. An emphasis is placed on not making the India congregations a
welfare program for American churches.
